His name is William de la Barre.

When you see the sturdy bronze statue perched above the bar at the Nicollet Island Inn, keeping watch as patrons enjoy a cocktail and a laugh or two, you would be forgiven for assuming that the name is made up. But it’s true!

William de la Barre was an internationally known hydroelectricity expert who lived and worked in Minneapolis in the late 1800’s.
